Mamdouh Khayyat The Most Famous Saudi Rally Driver


JEDDAH – A former Rally driver, Mamdouh Khayyat, has won the “Most Famous Saudi Driver” moniker following a vote held by a sports website .

Khayyat beat Ahmed Al-Saban and Abdullah Bakhashab to the pole receiving 4,048 votes from fans on the website http://www.sauditestdrive.com.

The campaign was announced through a social networking website. Al-Saban won 3,721 votes and Bakhashab 3,207.

Khayyat was honored at a gathering held at Grand Prix Café .

He was the first Saudi Rally driver to have won a Rally event in Bahrain in 1983 .

“At that time, I had to transport my car to Bahrain on a boat because there was no bridge linking the two Kingdoms,” Khayyat said : “Once I travelled 2,600km to Oman to participate in a race. I had to sleep on the tires in my van,” he said, adding: “I spent a lot of money in the first two years on races .

Later companies took note of the sport and I won sponsorships.”
According to Omar Al-Nahdi, Saudi test drive website manager, the voting system was accurate.

The visitors were required to provide a valid e-mail address and mobile number to ensure that their votes were counted .
